As we move into August, summer is beginning to wind down, but the busy season certainly is not. Between stinging insect calls, preparing for the upcoming conference, and keeping technicians safe during Iowa's hottest weeks, there is plenty happening across our industry. As always, the Iowa Pest Management Association is here to support you every step of the way.

Heat Safety Comes First

August is traditionally one of the hottest months of the year in Iowa. Long days in the field can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses if precautions are not taken.

Help keep yourself and your team safe by remembering to:

• Stay hydrated throughout the day instead of waiting until you're thirsty.
• Take breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned vehicle whenever possible.
• Wear lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and a hat.
• Watch coworkers for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
• Adjust work schedules when possible to avoid the hottest part of the afternoon.

Taking a few extra minutes to cool down can prevent serious injuries and help everyone return home safely at the end of the day.

Pest of the Month: Wasps

Late summer brings an increase in calls for stinging insects throughout Iowa. Three of the most common species technicians encounter this time of year are:

• Paper Wasps — Frequently found building umbrella-shaped nests beneath eaves, decks, and outdoor structures.
• Cicada Killer Wasps — Large solitary wasps that may appear intimidating but are generally not aggressive unless handled.
• Yellow Jackets — Highly defensive social wasps that often nest underground or inside wall voids and can aggressively defend their colonies.

When treating any stinging insect, technician safety should always be the top priority. Wear the proper PPE, carefully inspect the treatment area, communicate with customers about potential hazards, and never underestimate an active yellow jacket colony.

Enjoy the Iowa State Fair

Nothing says August in Iowa quite like the Iowa State Fair! This year's fair runs August 13-23 and features concerts, livestock shows, exhibits, competitions, family activities, and of course, plenty of delicious food on a stick.

Whether you're checking out the Butter Cow, attending a Grandstand concert, or simply enjoying a day with family and friends, we hope you take some time to enjoy one of Iowa's favorite traditions.

Back-to-School Season

As many families prepare for a new school year, August can become one of the busiest months both at work and at home. We hope everyone enjoys these final weeks of summer with their families before school is back in session.
